This interactive map shows mapped vegetation types across the Living Landscape study region in the South Australian mallee.
The vegetation map was developed using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, terrain variables, vegetation and moisture indices, field-verified training data, and Random Forest classification in Google Earth Engine.
The mapped classes include lunettes/playas, shrubby mallee, belah woodland, Triodia mallee, shrubland, and derived grasslands. This vegetation map provides an input to related Living Landscape map products, including State-and-Transition Model condition states and mallee bird habitat suitability predictions.
This map is intended as a broad-scale decision-support output and should be interpreted alongside field validation, local ecological knowledge, classification uncertainty, and the limitations of satellite-derived vegetation mapping.
This project was supported by funding from the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program through the Resilient Landscapes Hub. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
